The Great Barrier Reef is one of the natural wonders of the world stretching from the northernmost point of the country to just north of Bundaberg. The great barrier reef stretches over 1600 miles along the countries coast.
The reef is a sanctuary for well over 1200 fish varieties, whales, dolphins, dugongs. An incredible amount of birdlife can be found there.
The coral which forms the reef itself is also a living creature. When it dies it turns light grey, and creates the structure for new coral growth. Different varieties of coral grow at varying speeds, while some are very fast growing, some species take well over a hundred years to reach maturity. The vivid colours are not formed by the coral but by the growth of algae living on it.
The great barrier reef needs a tropical climate as it requires on warm shallow waters to survive. Salty water and plenty of light is needed to maintain the health of the coral.
With hundreds of thousands of square miles of reef it is a watersports mecca. Access through day cruises are available from the communities all along the coast. Even if you don’t go in the water you can see the wonders of the reef through glass bottom boat tours.
The reef is world heritage listed and extensive sections are restricted from fishing and the taking of coral from the reef is prohibited to preserve it for generations to come.
The colourful and exciting capital of the far north, Cairns is alive with exciting activities. Situated in the middle of some of the most photographically beautiful and environmentally important areas on the planet, Cairns is the obvious doorway to the natural riches of rainforest, tablelands, outback, and The Great Barrier Reef. The city itself has many attractions – unbeleivable bargains, theatres, cinemas, museums, botanical gardens, a casino, and fine contemporary dining. Cairns is firmly established as one of the countries leading visitor destinations, being the centre for all the best water based activities.
